Every website has a mission. Commercial websites want to attract prospects and convert them into clients. Not-for-profits want to attract donors, and explain how they contribute to the community.

Hobby websites hope to attract visitors with similar interests, to demonstrate their expertise and learn from the community. How do we attract the visitors we want to our website, the first step in converting them into clients?
What are keywords?
Keywords are essential in attracting a potential client to your site. A keyword, or index term or descriptor in Information Retrieval, is a term that captures the essence of the topic of a document. It is used as a keyword to retrieve documents in an information system, for instance a catalog or a search engine. A popular form of keywords on the web are tags which are directly visible and can be assigned by non-experts also.

Index terms can consist of a word, phrase, or alphanumerical term. They are created by analyzing the document either manually with subject indexing or automatically with automatic indexing or more sophisticated methods of keyword extraction. Index terms can either come from a controlled vocabulary or be freely assigned.

Why are they important?
There are tens of millions of searches made every hour around the world. (Visit Search Engine Watch for detailed search statistics). Searchers type in keywords and search engines, Google  being the largest, display the results. The search engines have already indexed your website pages and associated keywords with those pages based on your content.
How should you choose your keywords?
Choosing the right keywords is the first step to a better search engine ranking. But how do you know which terms are right for your business? Consider these tips:

Remember the basics:
Enter your keywords in order of importance, and be sure to use keywords that actually appear in your page content. Don't repeat keywords more than twice (and not consecutively!), separate your keywords with commas, and keep the list to under 256 characters.

Be specific.
Because there's so much competition for general keywords, you'll need to choose specific phrases to set yourself apart. For example, if you choose shoes as your keyword, you'll never get good results - it's far too broad. Instead choose terms or phrases like women's patent leather high heels or canvas basketball sneakers san francisco. The more specific your keywords, the more targeted your traffic.

And try the Google Keyword Tool.
What do you do with your keywords?
1. Include keywords in your copy which you will naturally do anyway. Excellent places for keywords include: your tag line, headlines, sub headlines, the first paragraph, and the last paragraph.

Keep in mind that search engine spiders are stupid. They're looking for the exact keywords, not something close. If you really want to be listed under the key phrase of "dog groomer and border", then that specific and exact phrase must appear frequently throughout your copy on all pages of your site. Be sure it is included in the first paragraph, in the first sentence if at all possible.

2. Put keywords in your META tags in the header of your web pages.
