Dear Ron,
Ron Foreman

The man who invented the world wide web says it is on the cusp of making its next big leap to become an open environment for collaboration, and he has not been so optimistic in years. ALSO: Movies have the Oscars, the web has its Webby awards. Look at this year's winners' websites. AND: Have some fun looking at your favourite websites the way they used to look many years ago using the Way Back Machine.

Tim Berners-Lee
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) May 19, 2006 - The World Wide Web is on the cusp of making its next big leap to become an open environment for collaboration, and its inventor says he has not been so optimistic in years. Still, Tim Berners-Lee, the Briton who invented and then gave away the World Wide Web, warns that Internet crime and anti-competitive behavior must be fought tooth and nail.

A lot of new technology is becoming available after many years to make the Web smarter and easier to use, he said. “My personal view is that a lot of it is coming together now. That is very gratifying to see, I’m very optimistic at this moment,” Berners-Lee said in a telephone interview ahead of the annual World Wide Web Conference, which opens in Edinburgh on Monday.

Webby Awards
Proclaimed “the online equivalent of an Oscar” by the New York Times (June 21, 2005), The Webby Awards is the leading international honour for Web sites and the innovators behind them. The Webby Awards is presented by the The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, a global organization with over 500 members including musician David Bowie, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, The Body Shop president Anita Roddick, “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, Naked Chef Jamie Oliver, and fashion designer Max Azria.

This years winners include: WEBBY ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Gorillaz, BREAKOUT OF THE YEAR: MySpace.com, WEBBY ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR: Marc Cuban, WEBBY LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: Dr. Robert Kahn, WEBBY PERSON OF THE YEAR: Thomas Friedman. The Leo Burnett Advertising Agency of Toronto (Canada's Big Ideas Come from Big Pencils) won for Best Visual Design / Aesthetic). See all of the winners here.

Way Back Machine
The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, they provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. One of the most popular archives is called the Way Back Machine. Browse through 55 billion web pages archived from 1996 to a few months ago. See how the web has evolved and look at your own organisation’s website as it was several years ago.

Technological innovations such as the World Wide Web, with its potential to change the world, don't come along very often. Have you thought about how you could use the WWW to help you to achieve your personal and professional goals? Perhaps we can help. Why not contact us to discuss your objectives.

Sincerely,

Ron Foreman
